Young Turkish photographer, Çağdaş Erdoğan, has been arrested in Istanbul and put on pretrial detention on accusation of membership of a terrorist organisation since mid-September 2017. Under Turkey's current state of emergency, pretrial detention can last up to 6 months. Initially, he was taken into custody allegedly for photographing the MIT building, Turkey's intelligence agency. But previously published photographs of his have also been cited as reason for his arrest. He has taken some of the most staggering photo sets of contemporary Turkey.
He refuses any propaganda for the nationalist movement or any orientalist images for the outer world. Çağdaş Erdoğan is a Kurdish Turk from the east of the Turkey. He left Konya and his sociology studies after meeting his mentor, Kursat Bayhan.
He came to Istanbul and began to tell unknown stories of Turkey, refusing to ignore the crisis his country is experiencing. Çağdaş Erdoğan, 25 years old, is among the more than 100 journalists arrested in Turkey.
Our association, Hyestart, which defends freedom of expression, is in solidarity with Çağdaş Erdoğan.
